Pray for RUF at New York University
From Matthew Terrell, RUF at NYU:
“I’ve tried going to church to connect with God, but all I can think while I’m there is ‘Am I just faking it? Is he really out there?'” This is what Greta* wondered aloud at a recent discussion group hosted by RUF at NYU.
That night, we watched this TED Talk by NYU Professor Jonathan Haidt and asked this question: is our longing for transcendence a result of evolution or the product of God’s design? Greta is not a Christian but wonders whether or not God is real. She has a desire for transcendence that she can’t explain, a desire to connect with some higher power, some purpose larger than herself.
I love having these kinds of conversations with students. More than just about any other demographic, university students tend to be “wet cement”. Open to new ideas. Open to being challenged and stretched.
- Would you pray for Greta and others like her in our ministry? God really is there and he really does love her. She doesn’t have to fake it.
- Would you pray that the Holy Spirit would give her eyes to see him, ears to hear him, and a heart to delight in him?
Because of your generosity we were able to bring over 50 students with us on our annual Fall Retreat in Garrison, NY. Since our students come from so many different schools, retreats and conferences play a crucial role in fostering deeper friendships among students and creating a community in which Christians and non-Christians alike can engage with the truths of Christianity. Here are a few photos from our weekend together!
Family – Since I last emailed Eliot and Zoey have both begun school (1st Grade and PreK, respectively). It’s been a challenge for us as a family to find a healthy rhythm with two kids in school all day and another at home, so please pray that we would settle into a good routine that balances work, school, fun, learning, and family time.
Students – We have a great group of new students from a variety of schools (mostly NYU, New School, and School of Visual Arts), so please pray that they would grow in their faith and find life-giving friendships in RUF. Please also pray for several non-Christian students who have gotten involved this semester, that RUF would help them find answers to their objections to Christianity and that they would come to faith in Christ.
Funding – Through you, God has already generously provided over $170,000 in gifts and pledges to RUF City Campus in 2017! Over the next 12 weeks, however, we will need to raise an additional $60,000 in order to provide for all the ministry God has called us to this year. Please ask God to meet those financial needs through the generosity of his people.
Thank you so much for praying for, caring for, encouraging, and supporting us!
